Class of 2019 soaring at inaugural online graduation

Every year, millions of students around the world throw their caps in the air and celebrate with their loved ones on reaching a life-changing goal – a qualification.

Sadly, as a result of COVID-19, this tradition was not a reality in 2020. This meant that the class of 2019 could not celebrate as they longed to, and Optimum had to come up with another way to recognise the amazing achievements of the graduants.

Inaugural online graduation

On 23 September 2020, Optimum had its inaugural NQF7 Advanced Diploma online graduation. Not only did the event mean that there would be a celebratory graduation, it also allowed for more people, from different geographical areas, to join in to celebrate the achievements of our remarkable graduants.

The event had all the traditional elements of the academic procession, from the march to Gaudeamus Igitur to addresses by various faculty members and students. Since we could not be together, the intimate ceremony allowed us to also share some personal highlights from the students as well.

Apart from the virtual ‘capping’ of our graduants, a highlight was the awarding of our top student from the class of 2019 – Nico van der Merwe. He also passed his qualification Cum Laude.

As the ceremony closed with the South African National Anthem, we were reminded that South Africans are resilient and that we stand together, even when apart.

This year illustrates how things can change in a heartbeat. It also showed, however, that we should take the time to celebrate all accomplishments and successes.

Congratulations to the graduates of the class of 2019! May you continue to grow and reach new heights.
